is a progressive, life shortening neurological condition for which there is currently no cure. It causes motor nerves, that supply muscles, to degenerate for reasons that are unclear. This causes muscle weakness which can affect the arms and legs, speech,
swallowing and breathing.
MND affects people differently. Some start with weakness of the arms and legs leading to problems with mobility and the ability to carry out the tasks of daily living. For others it is speech and swallowing that are affected first.
For some people MND is rapidly progressive over a few months whilst for others the deterioration occurs over several years.
Around 5000 people across the UK are currently living with MND and six die every day. In Hertfordshire at any one time there are between 80 and 100 people living with MND.
Those living with MND, and their loved ones, face many challenges. The MND Association is there to provide information, emotional and practical support such as funds for equipment. It also funds research. At a local level, the Hertfordshire Branch provides Association Visitors and runs two monthly meetings for people with MND and their carers to get together.
The Hertfordshire Branch of the MNDA is grateful to Brian his ongoing support for the MNDA.
Enjoy a weekend of great music!
